Sundays in Sheffield

Every Sunday, in every weather, we are outside Sheffield City Hall. Some weeks there are five of us; others there are fifty. This page is a record of what we do and who we are.

What to expect

Peaceful and lawful

We hold a static, peaceful gathering. No marching, no blocking the road. We coordinate with South Yorkshire Police and have never had an incident.

Who you'll meet

Iranians who have lived in Yorkshire for decades, students who arrived last year, and British neighbours who simply care. Families, retirees, young professionals. No politicians.

What to bring

Yourself, warm clothes (it's Sheffield), and a willingness to talk to passers-by. Flags, placards and leaflets are all provided. Children very welcome.

How to find us

Barker's Pool, in front of Sheffield City Hall (S1 2JA). The closest tram stop is City Hall on the Yellow/Blue/Purple lines. Look for the tricolour flags with the Lion and Sun.

Talk, chant or just stand

Most weeks are quiet solidarity. We chant from time to time — when there's a crowd, when we want to be heard — but mostly it's conversation with passers-by. You are welcome to chant, to talk, or to simply stand with us in silence. All of it counts.

If you've never protested before

That is completely normal. Many of our regulars had never stood in a public space holding a flag until they came along once. There is no script, no chanting drill, no expectation. Stand at the back, watch for a while, leave when you want.

Common questions

The questions people ask us most often before coming along for the first time.

I'm not Iranian. Am I welcome?

Yes — very much. Many of our regulars are British neighbours who simply think the Iranian people deserve better. You don't need any background, you don't need to speak Persian, you just need to turn up.

Is it safe? Will I be photographed?

The gathering itself is peaceful, lawful, and coordinated with South Yorkshire Police. We have never had an incident. The regime does sometimes photograph protesters abroad — we never photograph our members without consent, and if you would prefer to stand at the back, that is completely fine.

Are you affiliated with a political party or foreign government?

No. We are not a registered party, not a charity, and not funded by anyone. We are a grassroots group of Iranians and friends of Iran in Yorkshire. We do not accept funding from any state.

Will I be asked for money?

Never. There is no membership fee, no collection bucket, and no donation request. Coming, listening and telling a friend are the only things we ever ask of you.

Can I bring my children?

Yes — please do. Sunday gatherings are family-friendly and children are very welcome. Sheffield winters bite — wrap them up.

I can't make Sundays. What else can I do?

Please write to your MP and your councillors — that helps as much as physically being there. Share the site with one friend. And come along the first Sunday you can.
