Write to your councillors
Town halls have a voice too. We are asking councillors across Yorkshire to sign a personal pledge of solidarity with the Iranian people, and to table a motion at full council calling for the proscription of the IRGC.
This tool covers Yorkshire and surrounding areas. For South Yorkshire postcodes (Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster), we will pre-fill the email with every councillor in your ward.
Find your council and send your letter
For South Yorkshire postcodes we pre-fill every ward councillor's email. Elsewhere we open the email blank and point you at your council's "find your councillor" page. A blind copy goes to our campaign tracker so we can count letters sent.
What you are asking for
- A personal pledge from the councillor to stand publicly with the Iranian people's movement for Woman, Life, Freedom (Zan, Zendegi, Azadi).
- A motion at full council recognising the human rights abuses of the Islamic Republic, condemning IRGC activity inside the UK, and calling on Government to proscribe the IRGC.
- Symbolic acts of solidarity, such as lighting public buildings, flying the Lion and Sun flag, or holding a moment of silence on key anniversaries.
Pointers for a council motion
A motion does not need to be long. We are not asking anyone to attach a pre-written document — these are simply the points a good motion would cover. Your councillor can use their own words.
- Recognise the human rights abuses of the Islamic Republic — repression of women and girls, execution of protesters, persecution of religious and ethnic minorities, imprisonment of journalists and lawyers.
- Express solidarity with the Iranian people's movement for Woman, Life, Freedom (Zan, Zendegi, Azadi).
- Note the threat the IRGC poses to British residents, including members of the local Iranian community, as documented by the Metropolitan Police and the UK security services.
- Call on the Government to proscribe the IRGC in full as a terrorist organisation, in line with the Prime Minister's existing public commitment.
- Resolve to write to the Home Secretary and the Foreign Secretary on behalf of the council in support of proscription.
- Commit to supporting and protecting Iranian residents of the borough from intimidation by regime networks.
- Mark key anniversaries — including the death of Mahsa (Jina) Amini — with appropriate civic acts of remembrance.
Pre-written letter to your councillor
Dear Councillor [Name], I am a resident in [council area] writing to ask you to take two simple steps in solidarity with the people of Iran. The Islamic Republic continues to execute protesters and imprison women here for not covering their hair. Since 30 December 2025, a state-led massacre has killed thousands more — verified counts now exceed 7,000, credible reporting places the figure above 30,000. The Prime Minister has committed to proscribing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Until that lands, councils have a real role in public pressure and in protecting their own residents from regime networks operating here. I am asking you to: 1. Sign a personal pledge of solidarity with the Iranian people's movement for Woman, Life, Freedom (Zan, Zendegi, Azadi). 2. Table — or co-sign — a short motion at full council recognising the regime's abuses, the IRGC's activity in the UK, and calling on Government to proscribe the IRGC in full. A short motion in your own words is more than enough; suggested pointers are on this website. 3. Where appropriate, support symbolic acts in [council area]: flying the Lion and Sun flag, lighting public buildings, or holding a moment of remembrance on the anniversary of Mahsa (Jina) Amini's death. Please reply and tell me whether you will sign the pledge and table — or co-sign — the motion. Many of us — Iranians and British neighbours — gather every Sunday from 12pm to 2pm outside Sheffield City Hall. You would be very welcome to join us. Yours sincerely, [Your name] [Your postcode]
